GROUND ACCESS

The ground is located in the southern half of the village, with the football pitch located behind the primary school and next to Penyffordd Bowling Club. Some parking is available in the school’s car park whilst on-road parking is another potential option as the car park can fill up quickly. However, it is highly advised to park in the car park of the nearby Red Lion pub and walk to the ground. Note it is a school field, so the facilities can be a bit basic in comparison with other Flintshire grounds, although extensive ground improvements have been made recently to ensure the standard has improved.

Penyffordd can be reached via train as it has its own railway station, which is just a ten-minute walk away from the football pitch. In addition, bus stops are situated nearby also, being just a five-minute walk from the ground also. Finally, the nearest pub is the club’s traditional home of the aforementioned Red Lion, which is just a five-minute walk away, on the corner of Abbott’s Lane and Rhos Road.

BRIEF HISTORY

Penyffordd FC

The current Penyffordd FC originate from the ashes of the old Penyffordd FC team, who competed in Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Premier Division, and had won numerous cups during their history, but sadly had to fold at the end of the 2015-16 season. The backbone of the new side, which was called Penyffordd Lions, came from the local Sunday League team, the Red Lion Strollers, as they made the transition back to senior football to ensure the village had a senior football team once again. Their suffix of “Lions” was a reference to their Red Lions heritage.

The Lions’ debut season of 2017-18 was one of their best seasons so far, having finished runners-up in the North East Wales League, and winning the North East Wales FA Horace Wynne Cup, eight years after Penyffordd FC last won the same competition. They maintained their position within the North East Wales League, consistently being one of the stronger sides in the fifth-tier league, before achieving promotion to the fourth tier at the end of the 2021-22 season when they finished as runners-up in the NEWL Championship.

The club announced at the start of the 2022-23 season that the Penyffordd Lions and the village’s youth football club, the Penyffordd Juniors, had merged together to create one club for the community, readopting the Penyffordd Football Club name for the whole club system, although still keeping the suffixes of “Lions” and “Juniors” to differentiate between the two sections of the club. Resultantly, the senior club amended its badge accordingly to absorb the dragons of the Juniors and the lion of the senior club to create its new logo. That season saw the club perform brilliantly as a newly promoted club, finishing in third position in the NEWFL Premier Division.
