GROUND ACCESS

The Argoed Sports and Social Club is located in the east of the village, near the Argoed High School, with its entrance on Snowdon Avenue. Car parking is available onsite although some on-road parking may be required if the car park fills up. The football pitch is located past the social club, at the top of the hill of the grounds. Naturally, snacks and drinks can be acquired from the social club building.

The nearest bus stops to the football ground are the Ffordd Ogwen stops located on Park Avenue, which are just a five-minute walk away (via Snowdon Avenue) from the social club. They can be reached by the 4 and 4S (Chester to Mold) Arriva bus routes that run between Mold and Chester train station, with the Chester station being the best one to use to reach Mynydd Isa using public transport. Another option would be to get to Buckley train station, walk twenty minutes into Buckley towards the Baptist Row/Lane End bus stop, and pick up a 4/4S bus from there to head to Mynydd Isa.

BRIEF HISTORY

Mynydd Isa has a great pedigree in Welsh football with the original Mynydd Isa FC being a well-known and successful name in northern Welsh football since its foundation in 1976. The old club mainly competed in the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) system but managed to rise to the second-tier Cymru Alliance during its history, and finished as high as fourth position at the end of the 2008-09 season. Sadly, despite its high league finish and finishing as the North East Wales FA (NEWFA) Cup finalists, the club had to fold following the conclusion of such a successful season, leaving the village without a senior club for many years. The current Mynydd Isa side was originally founded as Ewloe Spartans in 2015 and joined the North East Wales League, playing their home games at Sychdyn. However, a move to the Argoed Sports and Social Club (the original Mynydd Isa FC’s home ground) in the summer of 2016 meant the club changed its name to Mynydd Isa Spartans.

In their first season as Mynydd Isa, the Spartans gained promotion to the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) by finishing as runners-up in the 2016-17 North East Wales League. They then spent the next three seasons competing in the WNL Division One, finishing as high as sixth position in their debut season in the league. The club did exceptionally well in the 2019-20 Welsh Cup, reaching the first round proper by knocking out then third-tier sides Llanuwchllyn and Denbigh Town, before being knocked out by Cymru North side Llanfair United by a 3-5 scoreline. Since the reorganisation of Welsh football in 2020, the Spartans competed in the North East Wales Football League (NEWFL) Premier Division. However, for the start of the 2023-24 season, the club dropped the ‘Spartans‘ part of their name to return back to Mynydd Isa FC as the senior team integrated with the village’s youth, veterans, and ladies teams and changed their club badge accordingly, display the year the youth team was founded on their new badge.
